Easy Easter Bunny Cake with Kids

I am SO excited to share this fun way to make an easy Easter bunny cake with your kids.

This cake is a family tradition for me. Every Easter I used to make this with my mom and sister. I love that my kids are now old enough to take part and make it with me. We started making it when the kids were 2. My son ate about half the candy, but I made sure I had plenty of extra!

First up – the cake.

Bake the cake mix in two circle pans. We usually buy a pre-made white cake mix but I had lots of  flour, sugar, and butter so we made our own using a recipe I found online.

Second – transfer one of the circle’s to a flat cookie sheet. Leave enough room for the ears on top and bow-tie on the bottom.

Next – cut the ears and bow-tie using the remaining circle cake.

This may be the most important part (not to put any pressure on you or anything). Cut one of the ears first- and then try to match the shape on the other side of the cake (see pic below).

Once you have the ears cut out, you can see the bunny’s bow in the middle. Go ahead and transfer each bunny ear using a spatula and transfer the bow tie last.  I did cut down my bow even more to make it fit in the pan.

After you have his ears and bow tie in place- get to frosting.

There’s no exact way to decorate the bunny. We just have fun with it. Over the years we have done many variations, but to keep it simple this year we just used icing, jelly beans and pull-n-peel Twizzlers. Be extra care icing the sides as it can fall apart easily.

We usually form the face first – using black jelly beans for the ears. Pink jelly beans for the nose and then the red Twizzlers to form the whiskers and mouth.

This was definitely  much needed Easter activity we needed this week to keep us busy and the kids did pretty good with it. We saved icing the bunny for when Boston was taking a nap because I knew we would likely not accomplish that task with him awake. London couldn’t wait to surprise daddy either, she was so proud of herself. For me, it brought back some great memories of making this cake with my mom. So, it was an all-around success. I hope you all are staying healthy and safe!
